Venky's will sanction some of the Adam Armstrong funds to find his replacement but Tony Mowbray expects a striker to be the only permanent signing of the window.

At least four more additions are targeted before Tuesday’s 11pm deadline, with Brighton pair Reda Khadra and Jan Paul van Hecke expected to join Leighton Clarkson and Ian Poveda in agreeing season-long loan deals.

However, Rovers’ most crucial bit of business will be finding a replacement for 29-goal Armstrong who was sold to Southampton earlier this month in a deal worth an initial £15m.

Confirming the Lancashire Telegraph’s understanding that a striker would likely be Rovers’ sole permanent move in the window, Mowbray said: “I think it’s the only place we can spend some money in my mind.

“We have to do that, and those are conversations with the owners, and the money is there if we want to do that and we’re trying really hard. It’s just not easy for the money that we’ve got."

Michael Obafemi, of Southampton has been Rovers’ main target of the summer, the striker making his first appearance of the season when used off the bench in an 8-0 Carabao Cup win at Newport County.

Mowbray said earlier this month a move for the Republic of Ireland international had gone off the radar despite the two clubs agreeing what is understood to be a lower than anticipated fee, with the striker one of five or six options.

And the manager has stressed the need for goals to be shared around following the sale of Armstrong.

He added: “I should say on record that we can’t replace Adam Armstrong for the money we’ve got, you’re not going to get a striker who can get you 30 goals for the money we’ve got.

“My mind is set on bringing in two or three other attacking-minded players into our football club and have five or six who can score 10 or 11 and let’s score 60, 70, 80 goals between us.

“The centre halves have scored, let’s get the midfielders scoring, and let’s spread it around more than just Adam banging them in. He was second top scorer in the league last season and we still finished 15th.

“Let’s get five or six who can get into double figures and then the team will probably win more football matches and do much better.”

Meanwhile, Mowbray has confirmed talks have taken place with Brighton & Hove Albion over loan moves for Khadra and van Hecke.

The deals have been held up by injuries to the pair, but they are expected to be tied up ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

Winger Khadra was due to become Rovers’ first signing of the summer earlier in the window, only for him to return to Brighton for treatment on a minor ankle knock.

Central defender van Hecke, who spent last season on loan with Eredivise club Heerenveen, has also struggled with an injury in pre-season, but Seagulls boss Graham Potter has confirmed his return to fitness.

Asked about the pair, Mowbray said: "I've met Reda and he's injured, as is Jan Paul. We make calls on those scenarios. We have had conversations with Brighton and bottom line they're their players, they've gone back as of this moment they're carrying knocks.

"Whether we have to make a call and progress with these things, how long will it take before they're ready. We're in discussions with Brighton about those sorts of issues so we'll see what happens.”
