Corry Evans hasn’t been selected in the Northern Ireland squad for their upcoming fixtures as the midfielder searches for a new club.

Evans, along with brother Jonny Evans, are two of several senior players not included in Ian Baraclough’s squad for upcoming games with Malta (May 30) and Ukraine (June 3).

The 30-year-old will see his eight year association with Rovers end this summer, during which he has been a regular for his country, winning 66 caps in all, featuring in two of their three matches in March.

However, he isn’t named in the 25-man squad for the friendly fixtures, despite experienced campaigners such as Stuart Dallas, Kyle Lafferty, Paddy McNair, Craig Cathcart and Niall McGinn all being selected.

The Evans brothers have been left out, as have captain Steven Davis and Newcastle United full back Jamal Lewis.

However, Stanley striker Dion Charles, who earned a first call-up in March after a stellar season for the Reds, keeps his place in the squad, while Paul Smyth, who scored three times during a loan spell at the Wham Stadium, returns to the fold.

He is set to become a free agent after his deal with Queen’s Park Rangers wasn’t renewed.

Northern Ireland will face Malta at the Worthersee Stadium in Austria on Sunday (5pm), with the game brought forward a day to comply with FIFA regulations.

The 25-strong squad will then travel to Ukraine for a challenge match at the Dnipro Arena next Thursday (7pm).

Baraclough said he had told his players after the World Cup qualifier in Bulgaria there would be no obligation to join the camp this summer after a gruelling run over the past 18 months.

"For many of them it's been two seasons back-to-back without any break whatsoever," he said.

"It's a big ask in these times. A lot of them have been without family, like (Davis) up in Glasgow with his family down south, he's been away from his wife and kids only meeting up from time to time.

"For the rest of them, some of them are out of contract, some are nursing injuries, some are getting procedures down, some are at different stages."
