Scott Wharton has signed a new three-year deal with Rovers.

The central defender has agreed an extension through to 2024, with a one-year option included.

The homegrown defender made eight appearances in 2020/21, only to see his season cut short by an Achilles injury in December.

Salesbury-born Wharton made his debut for the club in August 2016, before enjoying successful spells on loan with Cambridge United, Lincoln City, Bury and Northampton, earning three successive promotions from League Two.

He returned to Rovers at the start of this season, impressing Tony Mowbray enough to break into the side, with the 23-year-old now rewarded with a new deal.

Wharton has made 14 appearances in all for the club, but has amassed over 100 senior games across his loan spells, and is excited by what the future holds for him at Ewood Park.

“I’m really happy and delighted to get it done and very grateful to the club for extending my contract for the next few years,” Wharton said.

it’s been a lot of hard work over the last few years to get to this position, but I want to keep going and get more games under my belt here at Rovers, so I’m looking forward to the future.

“There’s no other team that I’d want to play for. This is the team that I support, so I’d love to be here for the next few years. I just want to get back fit and be raring to go."
