ROQUE Santa Cruz has backed Blackburn Rovers team-mate David Bentley to soon transfer his Blackburn form onto the international stage.
After a terrific season at Ewood Park, midfielder Bentley will be hoping to claim England's right flank, a position dominated by David Beckham for a decade, as his own under new national team manager Fabio Capello.
And he has been given a vote of confidence from Rovers marksman Santa Cruz (pictured), who believes the 23-year-old is ready to showcase his ability on the world scene.
"David has the quality to be a great player, but he is someone who has to really feel that he fits into the team," said Santa Cruz.
"He must be given the confidence of knowing that he is an important part of the team because then he plays better.
"I am sure that once he is really made to feel an England player and is accepted by the team, then he will perform just like he does for Blackburn.
"It is important for every player to feel he is the number one man for his position, but perhaps David needs even more belief because there are so many great players in England."
In a fine international career for the Three Lions, Beckham has long been regarded as the world's best crosser of the ball, and faultless in his distribution.
But Santa Cruz believes Bentley has all the same qualities to step into the LA Galaxy midfielder's shoes.
The Paraguayan added: "David Bentley can also give a great pass, but even at the age of 33, Beckham still obviously has the talent to play for England.
"David just has to keep growing as a football player.
"The more games he plays, the better he gets, and then he will become an England player.
"It is also important for players to become experienced in winning big games and titles for his club.
"That gives you the confidence to believe that you are an international player.
"Winning games against the top teams in the Premier League will help him because he will believe more.
"I think David feels that at Blackburn he is recognised as the talented player he is.
"He likes to understand what is being asked of him and he knows that everyone at Blackburn is there to help him."
Santa Cruz has become an instant fans favourite in his first season at Ewood Park.
The former Bayern Munich striker has scored five goals in his last two games - despite twice being on the losing side - and is now looking forward to an extensive Christmas programme.
He added: "I will play many games, but I don't have a problem with that because it means that my family won't get bored!"
