BLACKBURN ROVERS player David Bentley left shoppers star-struck when he called into a charity shop to help out in the run-up to Christmas.

The England international visited the Blackburn Scope shop to lend a hand to the volunteers.

The shop was selected as part of the Premier League's 'Places for Players' initiative - part of the flagship community programme Creating Chances, which involved Premiership players from across the country helping out good causes.

Following the presentation of £2,000 to Scope North West, David spent two hours with Scope, helping to serve customers and even taking a peek in the men's clothing rack.

Claire Stone, assistant manager in the store said: "It was quite a thrill to have David in the store, as he is quite the local hero.

"A few customers did a double-take, and I think we've had more people dropping by since, to see who else they might spot!"

Scope North West was one of 500 charities to benefit from Creating Chances, and was chosen as the recipient of a player for a day by Blackburn Rovers FC who held Scope as their charity of the year for 2006/2007.

Rebecca Bentham, Scope North West coordinator added: "Blackburn Rovers FC have been extremely generous with their continued support for Scope North West and having David visit our Blackburn shop was the icing on the cake and made our year.

"The Premier League's Creating Chances campaign will help raise awareness of Scope's work in the North West as well Scope's work across England and Wales supporting disabled people to achieve equality."

The star said: ""It was great to be able to help and I enjoyed it.

"As a footballer it is always good to be able to give something back to the local community."

David's visit was filmed by the 'Premier League World' Sky Sports programme that will be aired to 630million homes around the world on Boxing Day.
