Blackburn's ice hockey fans were treated to two pulsating games over the weekend.

On Saturday, league leaders Whitley Bay Warriors came to town for a cup game and the Hawks were out to prove a point, having crashed to the same opposition only two weeks before.

After falling behind early, the Hawks came to life in the second period, when two quick goals from Lance Derbyshire and Rick Bentham restored parity.

Roared on by a very vocal crowd, Derbyshire hit an unstoppable slapshot from the blue line, to give the Hawks the lead going into the final period.

Whitley re-took the lead in the third but indiscipline saw the Warriors reduced to three men.

And the Hawks took full advantage as Ryan O'Reilly was able to slot home from close range.

Whitley once again re-took the lead, and with time starting to run out, the home team dug deep once more.

And star import, Dusan Kubik, who was deservedly named MVP, scored a last-gasp equaliser to send the game into overtime.

The result could not be settled during the five minutes of overtime, so the game went down to penalty shots, to find a winner.

Danny Brittle performed heroics in the Hawks net, saving two of the five shots, but unfortunately it wasn't enough as the Warriors won the shoot-out 3-1.

On the Sunday, the Hawks travelled to rivals Flintshire Freeze and left with a 3-0 victory.

The game's first goal came from a goalmouth scramble, flicked home by Aaron Davies. Hawks extended their lead in the second thanks to Derbyshire.

And, as the Freeze pressed, Kubik killed the game off with a fierce slapshot beyond ex-Hawk goalie, Matt Crompton.
