Rovers have announced their latest intake of scholars – including two players who’ve been called up by England Under-16s.

Charlie Weston and Adam Wharton, who is the younger brother of Rovers defender Scott, are among the 11 players to graduate through the Under-16s to agree two-year scholarship deals.

The club earlier this month announced that eight of the current Under-18s crop had signed professional contracts as a reward for their run to the last four of the FA Youth Cup, the future of which remains unresolved.

They also added Tyrhys Dolan to the fold, signing a two-year deal after his exit from Preston North End, in a boost to Billy Barr’s numbers for next season's Under-23s group.

Under-18s boss Mike Sheron has already included several of the 11 scholars in his set-up, including Harry Leonard and Georgie Gent who have both featured in the FA Youth Cup run.

Weston and Wharton have also been involved, as has Evan Cunningham.

The other players to sign deals are Ben Fyles, Patrick Gamble, Jay Haddow, Kristi Montgomery and George Pratt.

Montgomery and Fyles have also had international honours already, with Scotland Under-16s and Wales Under-16s respectively.

The news comes after an excellent weekend for the Rovers Academy saw Hayden Carter and Jack Vale both make their senior debuts in the 4-3 win over Reading.

They were part of a matchday squad which included eight Academy graduates, seven of which were on the pitch by the final whistle, with five having started.

The latest crop have all signed two-year scholarship contracts through to June 2022 and will join the club on a full-time basis when they resume training later this month.
