MARK Patterson admitted he was shocked to learn that Owen Coyle made the move in to management but believes Burnley will get a genuinely good guy.

The pair played together at Bolton Wanderers during the mid-1990s and Patterson didn't think the Scottish striker was management material.

"When I heard he had become a manager, I have to admit I was shocked that he did it so early," said Darwen-born Patterson who played more than 200 games for Wanderers.

"He never struck me as someone who would make the move into management but I am delighted for him. He is one of life's genuine good guys.

"Owen is a very intelligent man and has a good footballing brain.

"And one thing is for sure, the players at Burnley would love him."

Patterson, currently assistant to Phil Starbuck at Hednesford Town, believes Coyle is not the sort of man to rule with an iron fist - but he will get the best out of his players.

"As a player, he was one of the lads and a bit of a joker in the dressing room. But, when he had a point to make, he always got it across. I'm sure that is the same as a manager."

The pair starred in Wanderers' march to the FA Cup sixth round in the 1993/94 season where, as a Division One side, they beat Everton, Arsenal and Aston Villa.

"Those were some wonderful times and Owen was an integral part of our success," added Patterson, who also played for Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United. "Owen had great feet and was a clinical finisher."

However, when Coyle takes up the Turf Moor post, Patterson is hoping he doesn't bring his old playing days diet with him.

Patterson added: "He had an awful diet and all he ate was sweets.

"That is why he was so skinny.

"But I am sure it is all chicken and pasta these days!"
