WELL, it was one of those days against Liverpool, wasn’t it?
I’d predicted that there was a chance we might turn over the European champions but in reality, we didn’t get close.
I thought until the first goal – a deflected cross which wrong-footed Nick Pope – we had the measure of Jurgen Klopp’s side but that took the wind out of our sails a bit.
The second was a sloppy error from Ben Mee – a rarity it has to be said – and by then the game was pretty much away from us.
If I have one gripe, it’s that we showed the visitors far too much respect in the second half.
We stood off them a bit too much and didn’t really create many chances.
That allowed Liverpool to really click into gear and while we managed to limit the chances they had, they didn’t really have to get out of second gear to see the game out.
I said it was a gripe but, hey, it’s Liverpool!
We know how strong they are and there’s no doubt that they’ll be challenging for the title again this season.
They’re a joy to watch at times, especially when the front three of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino click into gear.
I just wish I was watching them do that against someone else!
We’ve got the international break now to refocus before a run of games that are very winnable for me.
Brighton away, Norwich at home, Aston Villa away and Everton at home are all games we should be looking to get something from.
And if we’re able to go on a bit of a mini-run then a solid start to the season will turn into a very good one.
This week we lost Steven Defour who has returned to Belgium to continue his career after having his Clarets contract terminated.
It’s a real shame to see him go because he’s undoubtedly the most talented player we’ve had at the Turf in the near-30 years I’ve been watching.
He’s struggled with injuries but when he did play he was just incredible.
And it’s fair to say his three goals for the club were all crackers.
That turn and long-range drive against Hull City, the chip against Bristol City and – the best of the lot – THAT free-kick at Old Trafford.
They say it’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all and I think for most Burnley fans that rings true when it comes to Defour.
