Rovers have earmarked Manchester City youngster Tosin Adarabioyo as their preferred option to boost their central defensive options.
The 21-year-old spent last season with West Bromwich Albion, playing 36 times as the Baggies were beaten in the Championship play-offs by eventual winners Aston Villa.
Adarabioyo played much of his football for West Brom as a right full back but is naturally a central defender and Rovers are understood to be close to a loan move for a Premier League youngster who would become their first temporary addition of the summer.
Boss Tony Mowbray saw his side ship 69 goals in their 46 Championship matches, having the worst defensive record away from home of any side in the division.
He is looking to supplement his options with reinforcements following the departure of Paul Downing and Jack Rodwell looking unlikely to return.
Adarabioyo would add considerable height to the Rovers backline, standing at 6’4.
He made his debut for City in an FA Cup tie at Chelsea aged just 18, and although yet top make his Premier League debut, he has featured in four Champions League and three EFL Cup ties since.
He started 21 Championship matches for Albion last season, making a further eight appearances off the bench, including both against Rovers last season.
