IAN Parkington has won the North West Formula Ford Championship for the second year on the spin.

And the Barrowford company director clinched it in style at Oulton Park, finishing first in Class and setting the fastest lap.

However, racing in his Reynard FF in the Pre90 class, Parkington had to overcome car problems before he could go on to celebrate - the driveshaft broke after two laps in qualifying, which saw him starting 12th on the grid.

But typical of his outstanding season, he overcame adversity to take the title.

He said:"I'm absolutely made up. We had a decent start to the year and then we had a few DNFs (did not finish) and crashes where we didn't score any points.

"We dropped to about third and we had to work hard to get back into the lead again.

"We just couldn't afford to make any mistakes near the end. But it was a great way to win it, by setting the fastest lap on the day."

And he believed this year's success was even sweeter than the first Championship.

He added: "This was a nicer win because it was a lot harder fought. Last year I didn't really have any problems with the car, I think I won nearly every race. This year I've had to really fight for it. It's definitely been more of a challenge."

Parkington is sponsored by Ballpark Engineering in Barrowford.
