ACCRINGTON Stanley skipper Peter Cavanagh insists the Reds are still harbouring play-off hopes despite an inconsistent start to the season.

Stanley make the long journey to Dagenham and Redbridge on Sunday aiming to improve on their current mid-table position.

But so far, Stanley's League Two campaign has been a stop-start affair, having won four and lost six in their opening 10 league matches.

The Reds are aiming high this term after narrowly avoiding relegation back in May and, despite an inconsistent run of results, captain Cavanagh is remaining optimistic.

"We've been a bit up and down so far this season," said the Stanley defender.

"We are following a good result with a poor one but we just need a little consistency to get us up the table.

"And with the way we've strengthened the squad during the summer, particularly the forward line, then I see no reason why we can't make the play-offs.

"On our day we can beat anyone."
