Jacob Davenport made his third appearance for Rovers Under-23s on Monday, coming through 90 minutes, as his Rovers return edges closer, writes Tom Schofield.

Davenport scored an early goal against Liverpool with a low strike into the corner from 20 yards out, showing the quality he possesses.

Glimpses of Davenport have been few and far between for Rovers fans after being injured in a pre-season fixture against Accrington Stanley, and then in a training game.

The summer signing looked comfortable on the ball, and was able to dictate play in what was an impressive performance from the Rovers youngsters.

His ability to pick a pass was on show throughout, and Rovers fans in attendance will have been impressed with Davenport’s showing.

In what will be a tough midfield to break into, Davenport’s endeavour will go a long way in showing Tony Mowbray that he has what it takes to claim a spot in the heart of Rovers midfield.

Not happy just dictating the play, he hassled the Liverpool midfield not giving them a moments rest, and wasn’t afraid to fly into 50/50 challenges.

After left-wing back Jack Evans was given his marching orders for a second yellow late on, the 19-year-old then filled in as his replacement, proving his flexibility, as Rovers held out for a first Premier League 2 win of the season.

In a side that works hard for each other, early signs suggest that Davenport has bought into that ethos and will work hard if, and when he gets his chance for the first team.
