Rovers Ladies boss Gemma Donnelly described tomorrow’s game as a “potential stumbling block” in their quest to become County Cup winners for the 13th time since 1995.

Rovers maintained their 100 per cent start to the season last time out, coming from behind to beat Fylde Ladies 3-2 in the FAWNL Cup Second Round, thanks to goals from Saffron Jordan, Natasha Fenton and Jess Holbrook.

Donnelly’s side now turn their attention to their Mercure Dunkenhalgh Women’s Challenge Cup Second Round tie against Morecambe Ladies.

“It’s a competition we’ve done amazingly well in over the last decade and we want to continue that success,” said Donnelly whose side have won all six of their league fixtures to sit top of the FA Women’s Northern Premier Division.

The Blues are the most successful team in the competition, which is contested by women’s teams across Lancashire, lifting the cup for the 12th time last season, one of three trophies they secured.

And eyeing yet more success, Donnelly added: “We’re in a really good position at the minute and this competition and this cup is one we value and enjoy being involved in.

“So I expect us to give a strong performance.”

Only three other teams have won the competition in the last 10 years, demonstrating Rovers’ decade of dominance.

Opponents Morecambe lost 4-3 to Sheffield FC after extra-time in the FAWNL Plate Competition last weekend and have won just one of their opening seven league fixtures.

However, Donnelly is not underestimating the FAWNL Northern Division One outfit, who currently sit 10th in the division below Rovers.

“Morecambe are a proven team and one we have met previously in this competition,” she said.

”On their day they can produce a performance worthy of winning Sunday’s game.

“Cup competitions bring that little something extra. Everyone wants to try and progress further and beat the current champions.”
