Blackburn Hawks have been dealt a major blow just one week into the new ice hockey season.

Netminder Jon Gould, who only joined the Hawks a fortnight ago, has returned to his home in Canada after failing to settle in the area.

Gould marked his Hawks bow with an outstanding display in the 9-1 victory over Lancashire Raptors last weekend.

The local ice hockey aces are now left short-handed between the sticks and general manager Graham Lomax admits they may be forced to seek a replacement.

"It is a shame that Jon has departed so soon," admitted Lomax. "But circumstances change. It is always disappointing to lose a good player, but he goes with our blessing.

"He had left his family behind in Canada, which was difficult for him. Jon himself was bitterly disappointed to leave Hawks, but we wish him all the best for the future. Our door will always be open for him.

"As far as a replacement is concerned, we do have a few options open to us. However, we just want to concentrate on this weekend's fixtures first."

Hawks face top Scottish side Fife Flyers in the Northern League competition at the Arena tonight (face-off 5.45pm), ahead of an away fixture with Nottingham Lions (7.15pm) in the English League tomorrow.
