Two East Lancs-based racing cyclists excelled in the British Time Trial Championships in Cheshire, coming home with second and third placings in their age categories.

Peter Greenwood, of Burnley, riding in the colours of the Clayton Velo, took second in the Masters age 55 to 59 group with a time of 41 minutes 55 seconds for the 18-mile testing course, and was only 32 seconds behind the group winner.

In the 45 to 49 group, Dave Metcalfe of Barnoldswick, and also riding for Clayton Velo, finished third in 40 minutes 51 seconds over the same distance. Overall winner but over the longer distance of 28 miles was Britain's top international rider David Millar, with a time of 56 minutes 57 seconds giving an average speed of 29.9 mph.

In the 10-mile time trial on the Levens near Kendal course, Jason Bateman of the Pendle Forest was the best placed of our local riders with his time of 21 minutes exactly, giving him eighth fastest, whilst Dave Hargreaves of the North Lancs. Road Club won the prize for fastest 60 plus rider in 22 minutes 01 seconds.

Even further north, near Keswick, Dave Brown was winner of the North Lancashire Veterans Time Trial Association 50 mile event based on age standard with 2h 07 m 25 s at age 69 whilst, at the other end of the age scale, 17-year-old Adam Pinder of Blackburn and District CTC was fastest Junior in the Open event with 2h 04m 22s in his first ever attempt at the distance.

The final midweek 10 mile event of the Rossendale Road Club was won by Roy Flanagan's 25m 29s ride which secured him the season-long series competition. Second on the night was Derek Schofield (26.10) followed by Mark Bateman (26m 25s) and Jerry Peel (26m 42s).

This week, Barnoldswick's Elite Roadman Ian Wilkinson of the Science-in-Sport squad is representing Great Britain in the Mountain Bike World Championships currently being held in Fort William. The seven day Tour of Britain starts at Crystal Palace on Sunday and will pass through our area on Friday, September 14. Local details and timings will be given next week.
