NELSON found the going tough at Formby, where a goal by Paul Lamb put them on the rack after only 12 minutes.
The Blues fought hard for an equaliser, but Alex Mugan was denied by a point-blank save from Lee Gunnion.
Nelson's pressure early in the second half created an opening for Chris Ridehalgh, but again Gunnion kept out his close range shot.
Formby's introduction of two substitutes caused problems for the Blues' defence and Martin Wilson doubled his side's lead after 68 minutes with an opportunist goal when he turned in a low cross.
Lamb scored a third just five minutes later with a 20-yard shot into the back of the net.
Jeff Moulton might have had a consolation goal for Nelson, but he shot over the bar after controlling the ball well just 12 yards out
