WHALLEY put in a disciplined performance with bat and ball to lift the Ribblesdale League's 20/20 Cup.

And skipper Martin Davies lavished praise on his team afterwards.

He said: "Throughout this season's 20/20 Cup, we've probably played our best cricket.

"I think the key has been taking the pace off the ball. After the openers come off, we put the spinners on and they've done the business.

"It was a good performance and it's nice to be able to celebrate some silverware because it's been a while."

Going into the game as underdogs against the Ramsbottom Cup winners and league leaders, they restricted the visitors to just 111 after Northern had won the toss and batted first.

Only two players made it in to double figures as the Whalley attack, led by pro Bradman Ediriweera who took 4 for 23 from his four overs.

Abdul Bisoodwal made 18 and Northern's paid man Devendra Bundela scored an unbeaten 50.

Whalley began steadily and a stand of 43 for the second wicket between Richard Palmer and Ediriweera looked like taking the game away from Northern.

But Northern hit back removing the professional and then Palmer in quick succession.

John Rain fell with the score on 84 the game was in the balance with 20 balls remaining.

Neil Cordingley and Alex Whelan took the score to 103 with one over to go before they both fell at the end of the penultimate over.

But Skipper Martin Davies and Lee Kearsley saw Whalley home with three balls to spare.

Neil Cordingley was named man of the match for his 2 for 21 and 19 with the bat.
