FRIENDS, family and football fans joined forces to take part in a tournament in memory of a teenager who sadly died last year.

The second Carl Vause Memorial five-a-side tournament was held at the JJB Soccerdome and attracted 12 teams.

Teams were split in to three mini divisions battling it out to qualify for the knockout stages.

Sportsman's Arms and Moorings from Division One won through to the semi finals with Huncoat United's Don Juans progressing from Division Two and PAPR Allstars from Division Three.

In the first semi final, Huncoat United beat Moorings 5-0 while PAPR Allstars came out on top in a high scoring clash with Sportsmans, winning 5-2.

But there was no stopping Huncoat who rattling in another five goals without reply in the final as the beat PAPR Allstars.

The Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen, Coun Maureen McGarvey, was guest of honour and presented the trophies. Money raised from the competition will go to Derian House.

Carl, a keen footballer who played in both the Blackburn Combination and Blackburn Sunday League, was killed in a car crash last year at the age of just 19-years-old Anthony Carney, the cousin of Carl organised the competition, thanked everyone for supporting the event.

He said: "I would like to thank the JJB Soccerdome for the help they provided, all the players and supporters who came along and also the Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen for presenting the trophies and making it a great day."

"The football was played with commitment but in great spirits," added Carl who play for Carney's Codgers. "It was good to see lots of players getting together from all walks of life and from all different backgrounds, ages and skill levels.

"I hope to see this event continue and grow for many years."
