CLITHEROE Hockey club were in devastating form at the Brookfields open held at Leyland Motors to continue their winning streak.

Hot on the heels of clinching the Summer League title, Clitheroe went to Brookfields as the team to beat.

Clitheroe entered there First and Second teams into the 10-team tournament giving some of there younger players a chance to play tournament hockey.

After very narrow losses to the first teams of Garstang, Chorley and Witton and Garstang Seconds, all which they lost 1-0, Clitheroe Seconds failed to qualify for the latter stages of the competition. However, the team were up-beat about there performances as they had lost four tight games and all the teams were of higher divisions than them.

With Clitheroe Seconds not progressing through the tournament it gave the Second team players the opportunity to get behind there Firsts.

They started with a tricky game against Leyland, after good pressure early on, new signing Alison O'Donnell put Clitheroe 1-0 up with a great deflected goal, Horsfall then added to the score sheet giving Clitheroe an opening 2-0 victory in there pool.

Next up was another tough game against a good, well organised Springfields team but Clitheroe made light work of the opposition to run out 5-0 winners. It was the same scoreline against Broofield Firsts with Hadfield and Horsfall scoring two each in a convincing win.

With one pool game remaining, Clitheroe had already booked their place the semi finals but didn't take their foot of the pedal as the secured a 4-0 win against Garstang Thirds.

It was another Garstang side who stood between Clitheroe and a place in the final, this time the stronger Seconds team.

However, Clitheroe turned in their best performance of the tournament so far and Rachel Box gave them the perfect start with an early goal. Clitheroe played outstanding hockey for the full 20 minutes of the semi final and Garstang were left shell-shocked after suffering a 10-0 drubbing.

Box-Morton scored a hat-trick with two for Horsfall while Box, Hadfield, O'Donnell, Laverty and Dennison completed the scoring.

Garstang Firsts beat Leyland 2-0 in the second semi final to set up Clitheroe's third meeting of the day against their arch rivals.

Having lost the winter and summer league titles to Clitheroe, Garstang had an added incentive to get one over an in-form Clitheroe side. In a first half where both keepers pulled off a string of fine saves, Horsfall rounded off an excellent team move to give Clitheroe the lead.

After the break, Garstang seemed shaky and Clitheroe capitalised forcing a penalty corner, a solid routine was enough for Petty to fire the ball under a diving Garstang keeper and put Clitheroe 2-0 up with minutes remaining. Clitheroe were now overpowering Garstang and Clitheroe should have scored a third but narrowly missed the goal. Garstang had no answer to Clitheroes dominant play and Clitheroe finished the game with a 2-0 win and another title.

Victory meant that Clitheroe go in to their own tournament on Saturday having won back to back winter league titles, summer league titles and summer tournament titles.

This year's tournament is extra special as it has been renamed the Canon Chard ladies hockey tournament in remembrance to the late Canon Eric Chard who died in December.
