MATTHEW Honey served up a double treat in the annual Marsden Building Society Burnley and District Tennis League Knockout finals.

The 15-year-old from Accrington won both the Millennium Cup Singles final and Golden Jubilee Under 21s title on a finals day held at Burnley Tennis Club.

Honey, a pupil at St Christopher's high School, defeated Daniel Taylor in both contests - with the Golden Jubilee final proving to be a real cracker.

The Accrington Tennis Club player showed great character to save two match points before winning the classic encounter, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.

The pair met again in the Millennium final but it proved to be one final too many for a brave Taylor who had already competed in the Express Cup Open singles earlier in the day - winning after his opponent retired due to illness.

Understandably, Taylor ran out of steam and the talented Honey wrapped up a 6-4, 6-2 victory.

However, Taylor did get his hands on some more silverware in the Millennium Cup Team final. He joined up with Daniel Hargreaves to play under the team name of It Was On The Line to beat Alison Padgett and Jenny Stewart's Cheeky Monkeys 6-3, 6-1.

By that stage, Padgett and Stewart also had a title to their name when they beat Alison Maxwell and Christine Ashton 6-4, 6-4 in an entertaining and very close match to win the Vicki Taylor Ladies Doubles.

In contrast, the men's doubles final was a one-sided affair with Iain Taylor and Simon Finnan beating David Suddall and Keith Saunders 6-1, 6-1 to lift the Clucas Cup.

Suddall and Saunders tasted defeat again in the David Mercer Veterans Doubles final when old stages, Mick Fox and Peter Huntingdon clinched a 6-3, 6-0 win.

Unfortunately, for Suddall it wasn't third time lucky as he lost his third final of the day, this time the Veterans Singles final where he went down 6-3, 6-3 to John Stubbs in what was a good solid final.

The Harold Lever Mixed final was another one-side affair - not down to poor players but the losing pair lacked the match experience of the eventual winners.

And it was Danny Whippy and Janet Cross who took the honours, beating Matthew Hargreaves and Christina Pongourou 6-0, 6-2.
