STAN TERNENT is clocking up the air miles in his new job as Birmingham's European scout.

The former Burnley manager has been flying all over Europe in the past month as Blues boss Steve Bruce looks for new talent before the transfer window closes next Friday.

Ternent, who left the Clarets in 2004, was in Denmark last weekend and Istanbul in midweek running the rule over players earmarked by Bruce.

He said: "Steve Bruce is a big pal of mine, and he asked me if I fancied the role.

"I still keep in touch with the game. I might be taking it easy now but I still get to as many games as I can during the week.

"So this role is one I enjoy.

"Basically, Steve could call at any minute asking me to scout a player.

"The European market is important, so he calls me and asks me to take a look at a certain player. I'll jump on a plane, have a look at that player and present Steve with a full assessment. It's a good arrangement.

"The transfer deadline is coming up so I've been busy the past few weeks, but I've really enjoyed it."

Birmingham, promoted this season, have also appointed former Everton captain Dave Watson as a scout.

Bruce said: "What we have to improve on is knowing the European market better than we do.

"We are hoping that another person with a vast experience of Europe will also come in."

Ternent, 61, has managed Blackpool, Hull, Bury and Gillingham. He led Burnley to promotion from Division Two in 2000.
