EVERTON'S signing of Yakubu for £11.25 million says one thing to me - what a bargain Roque Santa Cruz was!
David Moyes had to break his club's transfer record to prise the moody Nigerian away from Middlesbrough.
But as he salivates over the prospect of teaming up his latest signing with Andy Johnson in a new-look Everton attack, it's worth remembering that Mark Hughes succeeded in landing both Santa Cruz AND Benni McCarthy for less than half of what it has cost to take Yakubu to Goodison Park.
Don't get me wrong, Yakubu is a decent striker at Premiership level, and I've no doubt he will score goals for his new club this season.
But there's no way he's worth double what Hughes has paid to sign two strikers who know what it feels like to win a Champions League medal.
For me, Yakubu's signing is just another example of the crazy spending currently going on in the Premiership.
Clubs have broken all records this summer, in terms of the amount of money they have spent, and with seven days to go before the window shuts, we can expect to see another mad trolley dash this week.
Thankfully, Rovers have a shrewd leader in Hughes, who seems to know the true value of players.
