With relegation from the Championship a very real possibility, Rovers were certainly in need of new faces this time last year.

Paul Senior was appointed as the club's Director of Football and Operations early in to the window but there was very little transfer action until the closing days.

Rovers eventually brought in Lucas Joao in the evening of January 30, with Marvin Emnes’ return sealed on the morning of deadline day.

But that would prove to be it as far as incomings fared, with Ben Marshall securing a last minute switch to Wolves in a deal worth around £1.3million, before an attempt to bring in Efe Ambrose failed because of work permit issues.

Jack Byrne had earlier retured to parent club Manchester City before being sold to Wigan Athletic, while Rovers missed out on several potential targets.

But what has come of them since?

DIMITRI CAVARE

The French full-back was at French side Stade Rennais when Rovers tried to bring him to the club.

Cavare had been short of football with the French club, turning out just twice in Ligue 1 and mainly being utilised in the B side.

Interest in Cavare, now 22, first emerged from reports in France, having also been linked with Reims, but a deal wasn’t forthcoming from either.

In the summer the young defender spent time on trial with Premier League side Huddersfield Town before eventually securing a two-year deal with Championship outfit Barnsley.

Cavare has played five times for the Reds, scoring one goal, but was sent off in last weekend’s defeat to Fulham.

JUAN CARLOS PAREDES

Right-back was clearly an area that Rovers were looking to strengthen, with Watford’s Ecuadorian defender Paredes among their targets.

Twenty-nine at the time, the Ecuadorian was out of favour with the Premier League side and had just made one EFL Cup appearance in the first half of the 2016/17 campaign.

Rovers tried to bring Paredes to Ewood, a player who had played 61 times for the Hornets after joining in 2014.

However, he would secure a deadline day move instead to Olympiakos where he would manage just four league outings.

His contract at Watford was ended via mutual consent in August before signing a three-year deal at Emelec in his home country.

EFE AMBROSE

Rovers did manage to agree terms for the Nigerian international with Celtic in a last-minute bid to bring him to Ewood Park before the transfer window closed.

However, work permit regulations saw the move drag on for another month before Rovers, and new boss Tony Mowbray, decided to call the move off with Ambrose having trained for a month with the first-team squad.

Keen to leave Celtic Ambrose did manage to find himself a new club, joining Hibernin where has made 43 appearaces in all under Neil Lennon.

ABDOUL BA

Owen Coyle publicly outlined his interest to bring the giant French defender to Ewood Park and had tracked the RC Lens man for some time.

A Mauritian international, Ba was seen as someone who could help stop Rovers shipping the number of goals they were which left them sitting in the bottom three.

Nottingham Forest were also linked with 6'7" Ba but neither proved successful as he stayed with Lens until the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

After three years with Lens Ba did eventually find a route out of the club, joining Ligue 2 club Auxerre where he has made 18 appearances this season, scoring one goal.

GILES BARNES

The attacking midfielder was one of the country’s brightest prospects when he came through the ranks at Derby County but failed to reach his undoubted potential in the English game.

The Jamaican international first made the move to the MLS in 2012 when he signed with Houston Dynamo before enjoying spells with Vancouver Whitecaps and more recently Orlando City.

It was during his time with Vancouver that Rovers tried to do a deal to bring him to Ewood but fell short in their attempts as Barnes joined Orlando in March as part of a swap deal involving former Stoke man Brek Shea.

This month Barnes was unveiled by his latest club, Club Leon who play in the Mexican Liga MX after his deal with Orlando expired.

PAUL CADDIS

The Scottish full-back first arrived at Rovers in the days following the closure of the transfer window having been allowed to find a new club by Birmingham City.

The experienced defender wasn’t however able to secure a deal during a week-long trial and would eventually drop in to League One to sign for Bury on a deal until the end of the season.

But despite a change of manager at Ewood, Caddis was back at Brockhall in June to work under Tony Mowbray who had previously been his manager during their days at Celtic.

Caddis impressed on trial, scoring twice in the friendly win at York City, before signing a two-year deal in July.

He has since made 19 appearances in all competition, but largely been an understudy to Ryan Nyambe who has benefited from Rovers’ failed moves for a full-back last January.

LUCAS MUGNI

The Argentinian attacking midfielder arrived for a trial at Brockhall alongisde Caddis in a bid to secure a permanent contract.

Mugni had just been released from his contract by Flamengo several weeks earlier having also seen a move to Turkish club Gaziantepspor fall through.

The left-footer was said to have impressed with his technical ability but his fitness was the reason a deal wasn’t forthcoming.

Mugni later joined Spanish club Raya Majadahonda and is now plying his trade in Chile with CD Everton.
