FORMER Blackburn Rovers vice chairman Walter Hubert today insisted Daniel Williams is the right man to protect Jack Walker's legacy.

Williams is fronting an American-based consortium that is interested in launching a takeover bid for Rovers, but when he outlined his plans in an exclusive interview with the Lancashire Telegraph earlier this week, some fans cast doubt on his motives for a possible buy-out.

However, Hubert has moved to reassure those supporters who fear for the future by claiming Williams is a genuine guy', who has the financial backing and the business expertise to take the club to the next level.

The 75-year-old, who had three spells on the Rovers board in the 1960s and 70s, and remains a fervent supporter of the club, said: "I've got Rovers' interests at heart and I wouldn't have recommended Daniel to the powers-that-be if I didn't think he was suitable.

"As far as I'm concerned, his integrity and his financial situation is beyond question, and he mixes with all the right people.

"This is not a Wall Street predator, for want of a better word, he's a genuine lad who wants the best for Blackburn Rovers."

Hubert had a hand in bringing Williams and Rovers together when the search for new investors gathered pace earlier this year, and having spent time in his company during the intervening months, he is convinced the US-based entrepreneur is a passionate Blackburn supporter whose main motivation is to see the club prosper, rather than make a quick return on any investment.

"I've been with Daniel to two or three games since this process began and make no mistake, he's passionate about this club," said Hubert.

"When he met Ronnie Clayton and Bryan Douglas, it was like a young girl meeting a famous film star.

"I loaned him several books on the Rovers when he first came over, and he's genuinely interested, and he is a supporter, there's no question about that.

"He's not here for the glory, and he's not here for the money because he's very, very mindful of the Jack Walker legacy."

One of the reasons why some supporters are sceptical about Williams' takeover plan is the fact he has so far refused to reveal the identity of any of the financial institutions that are backing him.

However, Hubert insists the 30-year-old, whose business interests include Princeton Global, a US building firm that has contracts worth more than $1 billion, has the support of some wealthy backers in the States.

"I can't tell you who they are at this stage, but I can only assure you that they are top drawer," said Hubert.

"These are people who would grace any London establishment, for want of a better phrase, and if they weren't then I wouldn't be involved in this in any way.

"Daniel is an ambitious young man so of course he wants to see the club do well on the field.

"He definitely has the right ideas to take the club forward.

"We, and I'm talking as a supporter here, would be very fortunate to have him look after the Jack Walker legacy, and I sincerely mean that."
