THE top performance by a local rider over the past week has got to be that of Burnley's Peter Greenwood who scored a decisive road race win at Bolton-by-Bowland.
Greenwood was riding a 44-mile League of Veteran Racing Cyclists event, based on the Ribble Valley village, and around half distance made a solo breakaway that resulted in him winning the 50 to 59 age group race by over two minutes.
Meanwhile, Dave Hargreaves of Blackburn, was taking third place in the 60-plus event, which was won by Les West of the Midlands, who was one of Britain's best ever racing cyclists in the 60s and 70s. His successes included two wins of the famous Milk Race.
Ian Stott, of Blackburn and District CTC, continued his run of form and took two quality second places.
In the Phoenix Aintree 10-mile time trial on Saturday, he clocked 21min 31sec - just 14 seconds behind the winner - and on Sunday morning returned an excellent 55 min 33sec in the West Pennine 25 mile at Garstang, just 11 seconds behind Preston's Robbie Brennan. Stott's team-mate, Carl Helliwell, took fourth in the 10, with 22m 04s, while junior club member Adam Pinder returned to racing after studying for exams with a fine 22.56 ride.
The Rossendale midweek 10-mile event at Hapton was won for the second week in succession by their own Roy Flanagan in 25m 32s with two North Lancs Road Club riders second and third, Mark Bateman clocking 26.36 and Joe Curran 27.34, while Rossendale's Adrian Watts was fourth in 28.04.
The Rossendale Road Club's top rider Paul Warrener is now home from hospital after breaking a leg in an accident when his front tyre exploded in a 10-mile race almost three weeks ago.
The Pendle Forest time trial was held over a hilly six-mile circuit with Carl Pawson of Nelson Wheelers coming out top in 14 min 30 seconds followed home by Stephen Singleton (16.23) and Martin Welsh (16.30) both from the promoting club.
