AS someone who actively dislikes the international break, it won’t come as a surprise to learn I can’t wait for a return to Premier League action on Saturday.
The transfer window ended in, quite frankly, weird circumstances with us flying in Polish international Kamil Grosicki on a private jet – yep, you read the correctly – only for last minute issues to put paid to the deal.
Still better to have loved and lost eh?
Even though I don’t care much for international football, it was certainly a decent week for a couple of Clarets.
Striker Sam Vokes was on the scoresheet for Wales during a pretty routine 4-0 win over Moldova while new boy Jeff Hendrick notched his first goal for the Republic of Ireland in their 2-2 draw out in Serbia.
Same on Saturday please lads.
Whether Hendrick – a club record signing from Derby County – will start against Hull City remains to be seen but we do at least have some competition for places in areas where we’ve been looking to strengthen.
I said last week that I though Hendrick was a shrewd arrival and it’ll be interesting to see if Sean Dyche throws him in for his debut and, perhaps more interestingly, who he’ll replace.
With Steven Defour struggling to get past the hour mark in the last couple of games – more down to the intensity of the Premier League compared to the Belgian top flight rather than any other issue – it might be a case of keeping Hendrick fresh to shake things up in the last third of the game.
Or Dyche may decide that he wants his two big summer signings together in the engine room in which case Dean Marney – such a consistent performer in the last few campaigns – will be the man to miss out.
I have a feeling that may be the long term plan – Hendrick as a direct replacement for Marney – but I still think Dean has plenty to offer.
I think our other signing from last week – striker Patrick Bamford on loan from Chelsea – may have to bide his time.
Vokes and strike partner Andre Gray have a great understanding between them and I’m sure Dyche would be at pains to disrupt that.
The Football Association may force his hand, depending on how Andre’s personal hearing over controversial tweets goes.
But with that still a few days away, I don’t expect much change up top.
Mike Phelan’s Tigers have had a decent start to the season and I think the game will be a decent benchmark of where both teams are up to.
