CHURCH won the Moorhouse’s T20 competition for the second time after beating Todmorden by 11 runs at Centre Vale.

The key moment came in the second innings with the home side chasing 118, when man of the match Jack Gaskill caught Todmorden’s record-breaking professional Ashton Turner for just four.

The Aussie pro has been in destructive form in the shorter format this season, and to get him so cheaply firmly swung the contest Church’s way.

The visitors had won the toss and elected to bat, with professional Zain Abbas (33) top-scoring. Star man Gaskill also added a quickfire 23 and Sam Holt 18 as they posted 118-7.

Turner’s dismissal was a moment of high drama as the Perth Scorchers all-rounder, who played in the Big Bash last winter, refused to walk as he thought the ball hadn’t carried into the hands of Gaskill, but he was sent on his way after the umpires conferred.

Zain Abbas was the bowler to snag the crucial wicket and went on to claim figures of 2-17, while Gaskill took 3-24 and Graeme Lalor 2-23.

Former Todmorden player Bilal Abbas took 2-14 on his return to Centre Vale and Kamran Basharat finished with identical figures.

Todmorden had slipped to 79-9 before Lalor came in to top score with 25, adding 28 with Hamza Ali (5 not out).

Lalor added a bit of hope for the home side as he hit three fours off Levi Wolfenden in the penultimate over.

But Abbas bowled a perfect last over to restrict Todmorden and had Lalor stumped on the final ball of the innings to leave them on 107 and 11 runs short of the target.
