BURNLEY manager Steve Cotterill looks certain to miss out on another summer transfer target as South-ampton close out a deal for striker Marek Saganowski.
Cotterill confirmed last week that the Polish marksman was among the names he was monitoring as he goes about bolstering his squad for the new Championship season.
But the Saints are expected to complete the permanent signing of Saganowski - who scored 10 goals in 13 games while on loan at George Burley's side last term - in the next couple of days after yesterday taking up their first option on the striker and agreeing a fee of £680,000 with French club Troyes.
Saganowski's transfer to the south coast club will come as some frustration for Cotterill, who revealed he was interested in the prolific 28-year-old.
Over a week ago, Cotterill said: "Saganowski is one I've been working on for a bit.
"There has been contact between myself and a representative of Troyes, but Southampton have first option to buy him. We'll just have to wait for some encouragement on that."
The Clarets boss has already missed out on a Premiership player he had pursued.
His intended target was believed to be former Middlesbrough right-back Stuart Parnaby who opted to join top flight newcomers Birmingham City.
It means Cotterill is still waiting to make a second summer signing, adding to that of former Crystal Palace goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly.
Southampton negotiated first refusal on Saganowski, and according to Troyes' official website, they have now confirmed their intention to sign the popular frontman on a permanent basis.
