BRENDAN Flood is hopeful that this summer's signings will help Burnley turn on the style next season.

The millionaire director has outlined his intention to back Steve Cotterill with adequate funds ahead of the new Championship season, although the Clarets boss admitted earlier this week that free transfers will remain the focus of his attention.

That point was proven with the first of Cotterill's summer purchases, Hungarian goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly, who arrived at Turf Moor on a free after being shown the door by Crystal Palace at the end of last season.

But regardless of the transfer fee of incoming players, businessman Flood is optimisitic that the Clarets will produce an exciting brand of football next term.

"It's a clean start and I think we'll have a few better players in (this summer)," said Flood. "And if we do, we'll have a good side.

"We'll have an entertaining side and that's what I would like next year.

"Hopefully, we can keep on progressing. If we can entertain and enjoy the season, making the club and team better, than that will be progress. Then hopefully we can try and improve on that the following season."

He added: "I think in an ideal world, most managers would like a squad of 30.

"For us to be competitive, realistically, if we bring in three or four players in that would be great - players that are better than what we've got.

"That's what we are trying to do this summer and if we do that, who knows."

Cotterill this week confirmed his interest in Southampton target Marek Saganowski. But he may have to turn his attentions for a new striker elsewhere as Burnley's Championship rivals seem favourites to land the Polish international.

A source close to the Saints says the club have enough cash to buy the frontman, who is valued at over £1 million, from French Ligue 1 club Troyes, and manager George Burley is optimistic of securing a permanent deal for his former loan star after the club's operations director, Lee Hoos, travelled to Poland to speak with Saganowski's agent, Jaroslaw Kolakowski.

Burley said: "Talks are going very well. We're hopeful something might get sorted there.

"There was an option in the contract when we took him which we're looking to take over.

"It's a case of agreeing personal terms".

Saganowski scored 10 goals in 13 games during his loan spell at St Mary's Stadium at the end of last season, and Cotterill, who has confirmed his interest in the player, has been monitoring the situation closely in the hope of tempting the former Legia Warsaw hitman to Turf Moor should the Southampton deal break down.

West Ham and Watford are also believed to be interested in the striker, who featured in Poland's 1-0 defeat by Armenia in their European Championships qualifier on Wednesday night.
