BACUP & Rossendale Borough’s mission impossible is down to mission ahead of their home clash with Bootle tomorrow night.

A weekend win over Winsford United, coupled with defeat for neighbours Barnoldswick, means that Brent Peters’ side can still pull off the great escape in the North West Counties League Premier Division.

Survival is not in their hands however with St Helens Town able to relegate Bacup and Barnoldswick should they beat Silsden tonight.

Peters’ side begin the week five points off safety with two games left - they end their season at Ashton Athletic on Saturday.

Barnoldswick, currently out of the drop zone, two points ahead of St Helens, have already completed their campaign while the Merseysiders conclude their season tonight knowing back-to-back league wins for the first time since September, will see them survive.

But Peters has turned down an invite to tonight’s clash which could seal his side’s fate, instead deciding to concentrate on matters he can control.

“Going to watch St Helens doesn’t interest me,” said the Bacup boss.

“We can’t control what happens in that game, we can only control what we can do.

“Even if St Helens win tonight, we just have to concentrate on finishing top of the relegation zone because you never know what will happen with re-organisation of leagues.

“There is a chance we could still stay up. We just need to make sure we finish as well as we can and as high as we can.”

Despite a season that has yielded just five league wins, Peters admits the dreaded drop has never crossed his mind.

“Relegation has never been mentioned in and around the team,” he said.

“I know we have been down there all season but there are reasons for that, we haven’t had the finance to attract players coming down the leagues so we have had to bring people into the league from below and it is a tough league.

“But we had a lot of players missing against Winsford and the lads showed great character to step up and get the win.

“That has made a difference, but we have lot of players signed on now and we just have to go out there and try and win our last two matches and stay up.”

Tomorrow’s game is an 8pm kick off at the Brian Boys West View Stadium.
