MAN of the moment Harry Kane described Danny Ings as ‘a great prospect’ as he backed the Burnley striker to follow him into the England squad after the Clarets’ draw with Tottenham.
Two of England’s biggest rising stars went head to head at Turf Moor yesterday and it was Ings who came closest to finding the net as the match ended goalless, to leave the Clarets 18th in the Premier League table.
Sunderland’s derby win over Newcastle United means Burnley are two points from safety with seven matches left to play.
Kane has previously played alongside Ings for the England Under-21s, before scoring 79 seconds into his senior England debut last week on the back of 29 goals for Tottenham this season.
Ings was also in contention for a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s squad after impressing for Burnley in his first season in the Premier League, and Kane thinks the Clarets star has the ability to join him in the senior England set-up in the near future.
“He’s a great player, obviously I know him well from the Under-21s,” Kane told the Lancashire Telegraph.
“He scores goals, his movement is great and he showed that today.
“He’s a great prospect for English football and hopefully he continues to do well.
“It’s down to the boss (Hodgson) and his choice. We’ve both just got to keep working hard, as do the other strikers who are trying to get a place in the team, and just see what happens.
“There are a lot of great strikers here at the moment, English strikers especially, which is great for the country.
“It’s great competition.”
Former Burnley striker Charlie Austin is also among those in with a chance of reaching the senior squad soon, after his form with Queens Park Rangers.
Kane is expected to link up with Ings once more in the summer at the UEFA Under-21 Championships in the Czech Republic.
The Tottenham ace has been earmarked to step back down from the senior squad to appear for Gareth Southgate’s side in that tournament.
Ings is also scheduled to feature in the championships, together with Clarets team-mate Michael Keane.
Kane, though, could not add to his impressive goal tally this season as he was kept quiet by the Burnley defence yesterday.
“I was disappointed that I didn’t get on the scoresheet, but that’s football,” he said.
“It was a tough game so all credit to Burnley.
“They played very well.”
