TOM Hamer has been named in an 18-strong British team for the IPC Swimming World Championships that take place in Scotland in the summer.

Burnley’s Hamer, who swims for the City of Manchester Aquatics club in Manchester will be joined by four-time Paralympic champion Ellie Simmonds in the squad for the championships which run from July 13-19 in Glasgow.

And Hamer can take heart from his performance in a meeting held in Glasgow last week, where he won a silver medal in the pool which will be used for the summer.

The talented teenager, who swam in last year’s Commonwealth Games, finished second in the men’s MC 200m Freestyle in a day where he also dipped under the two minute mark twice in setting a British record.

“I am pretty chuffed,” Hamer said after clocking a time of 1.58.92.

“I am so pleased with myself. I’m also happy I went faster in the final because that’s what it’s there for.

“I’ve got a PB in every event even in finals. I’ve been working really hard in the National Performance Centre and I need to keep it up now.

“I love this pool. I love the atmosphere and it holds really good memories.”

Hamer will now turn his attention to replicating his record-breaking form come July where national Performance Director Chris Furber believes Team GB can shine.

He said: “The team we have selected is strong and reflects the goal of the competition which is to win gold medals and qualifying slots for Rio.

“There were some really excellent performances last week in Glasgow and I know the athletes have gone back to their home programmes to continue to work hard.”
