IT’S ALL over bar the shouting as VIP snatched a 5-3 win at nearest rivals Longshaw B to put themselves 12 points clear going into the final week’s games.
It was a match that had everything, five black ball games, some outrageous flukes as well as some quality play.
Longshaw took the first easily enough and looked to be on course to make it 2-0 when Craig Steele slightly over ran a safety. Opponent Jake Fuller was inspired as he slowly but surely put together a fantastic clearance to pinch it on the black.
The doubles was more of the same, some tense snooker before the Longshaw pairing of Chris Lawson and Steele took it - also on the black.
The next game changed the whole match when Longshaw’s George Holden played one attacking shot too many and gifted the frame to young opponent Murad Iqbal.
The win lifted the whole VIP squad who minutes before had been staring at the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline when Holden led by 20 on the brown.
At 2-2, VIP had their tails up and took the lead in the next with an easy win for Umar Hussain over Alan Heaton.
Heaton paired with Gaz Hampson in the next and the two, who have only lost once as a team this season dug in deep to take another on the black. Hampson and Ibby Khan had an enthralling battle before Khan took another black ball win.
The final frame of the night pitted the young guns Jonny Hannan and Haider Ali against each other in what turned out to be an anti climax, neither player showing their true ability until Ali ran out the colours to seal frame and match. While it is still mathematically possible for VIP to lose the title it is virtually impossible.
The VIP squad won promotion just last season and have gone on to light up the top division.
While the top of the table has been sorted out it’s a different story at the bottom.
Punch find themselves six points adrift after losing 6-2 to fellow strugglers Blackburn Golf A.
With Punch surely relegated now the battle is on between the Golf Club and Longshaw A for who stays up.
Longshaw ended their season with a 6-2 defeat at Park and can now only sit and watch next week as the Golf Club battle for survival at Cherry Tree.
The last fixture saw Fox & Hounds destroy Hoddlesden Con Club 7-1 to put themselves up to third.
Mill Hill A have one hand on the Second Division title after a good 6-2 win over Blackburn Golf B put them fourpoints clear with just one game left. Nearest rivals Orchard Social matched the 6-2 scoreline to beat Mill Hill B and make sure the title race goes to the final week.
Third placed Rishton Golf Club are not out of the race yet and a solid 5-3 win over the inconsistent Anchor B kept the pressure on the top two.
Wilpshire Hotel have had their struggles this year but they looked good value for their 5-3 victory over Feniscowles.
