ROSSENDALE Harriers are holding a race in memory of acclaimed fell and mountain running photographer Pete Hartley who passed away in November.

The Pete Hartley Memorial Liver Hill Race gets under way at 6.45pm at Marl Pits Sports Centre on Tuesday and will be well supported by local clubs.

The race is 7km and includes 820 feet of climbing.

Pete had a long and distinguished career running and racing in fell and mountain races, both in the UK and abroad, and when the first of his four hip replacements prevented him from competing, he took up travelling to races to photograph the events.

The award, which has been called the Pete Hartley Memorial Rossendale Harriers Fell Running Trophy, will be presented annually to a club member for outstanding achievement in fell and mountain races.

For 2014 the club panel decided that the outstanding candidate was Richard Campbell who has competed in several long distance ‘ultra’ races.

Richard was highly delighted to receive the award and was presented with the trophy by Pete’s daughter Clare, his grandson Benjamin, his partner Denise Park, and the club’s chairman Graham Wright.

Rossendale Harriers Running Club are based at Marl Pits and train every Tuesday and Thursday night starting at 7pm.

The group welcome athletes of all standards to join the sessions.
