BURNLEY striker Danny Ings has missed out on a place in Roy Hodgson's England squad for matches with Lithuania and Italy later this month despite an impressive debut season in the Premier League.

But Premier League stats suggest England should have called up the 23-year-old.

Ings' goal return, for a side struggling at the wrong end of the table, stands up well compared to those strikers named in the England squad.

The Clarets striker has scored nine top-flight goals this season, more than Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge (3) and Arsenal's Danny Welbeck (4) combined.

Tottenham's Harry Kane is the leading English goalscorer this season with 16 while Wayne Rooney has 11.

Former Burnley striker Charlie Austin has netted 15 times while West Brom's Saido Berahino has 12 goals but the pair were also overlooked by Hodgson.

Clarets fans know Ings' game is about far more than simply goals though.

The Burnley frontman has assisted more goals than any of the selected strikers aside from Rooney with the pair both creating four so far this season.

In contrast, Kane has just three assists, Welbeck two and Sturridge one.

But for now Ings will have to wait for his chance.
