BEN Mee hopes Burnley’s famous victory over Premier League champions Manchester City can act as a turning point in their season.

Former City youngster Mee hailed the win as the Clarets’ best performance of the campaign, and admitted the final whistle was a special moment for him personally as he ended on the winning side against his old club for the first time.

The three points hauled Burnley back to within a point of 17th-placed Sunderland and ended a run of seven games without a victory, and 15 without a clean sheet.

The Clarets have taken four points from the champions this season, but still find themselves in the relegation zone with nine games to go.

“We’ve been playing well and not getting the results we deserve sometimes,” said Mee. “Hopefully this is a turning point.

“It was the best performance of the season, for me. The way the lads worked, the atmosphere was brilliant, it was a special night for everyone. If we carry on playing like that towards the end of the season we’re going to pick up many points.”

The big games keep coming for Burnley, with a trip to Champions League-chasing Southampton on Saturday, before fellow top-four challengers Tottenham and Arsenal come to Turf Moor, but Mee believes the victory over Manuel Pellegrini’s side gives them a huge confidence boost ahead of the trip to the south coast.

“We can take a lot of confidence from it and hopefully we’ll win many more and pick up more points,” he said.

“We’ve taken four points off the champions, we’re going to go into it with confidence and we managed to get the win here against them so there’s no reason we can’t do that again.

“We know we can beat anybody, especially at Turf, and if we get the atmosphere like we did on Saturday in every game coming up at home it’s something to look forward too.”

Burnley went into the late kick-off against City knowing they were in danger of being cut adrift in the relegation zone, with Aston Villa’s 4-0 win at Sunderland opening up a four-point gap.

But Mee and the rest of Sean Dyche’s side showed no sign of nerves as they defended with resilience and looked to take the game to the visitors, and the 25-year-old said the players weren’t feeling the tension at this late stage of the campaign.

“There’s great character in the squad and the staff around us,” he said. “People thought that last year when we going for promotion but the lads stay calm.”

Mee faced a late penalty call against him as Pablo Zabaleta went down in the area, but Andre Marriner waved away the appeals, and the left-back said he didn’t think he had touched the Argentine.

Other than that heart-in-mouth moment it was another assured performance from Mee, against the pacy Jesus Navas, as he continues to keep the fit-again Stephen Ward out of the side, and he is pleased with his own form at the moment.

“I’m happy,” he said. “I just want to do my best. I’ve been fortunate enough to keep playing and I want to go towards the end of the season playing well for the team.”
