And the advantage was doubled 10 minutes later when Stuart Callaway collected a pass from Sam Joel and crossed for Luke Wall to fire home his fifth goal of the campaign.

Rovers boss Brian Carey, whose side have won four and drawn one of their last eight matches, said: “Newcastle had a lot of the ball, but it was largely in their half as we defended well.

“We were pleased with how we played. We adapted well to the windy conditions, unlike last week against Liverpool.

“We scored two good goals and it is always good to get a clean sheet.” Rovers will play a further seven matches between now and the end of the season.

Their opponents in their play-off group will be Newcastle, Fulham, Arsenal, Southampton, Norwich City, Bolton Wanderers and Stoke City.

Rovers make a swift return trip to Newcastle this Saturday before welcoming Fulham to Brockhall on March 21, Southampton on April 11, Norwich on April 18 and Stoke on May 9 (all 11am kick-off).
