TWENTY-TWO down, two to go, and then we will be ‘The Invincibles’ of ice hockey.
I think Whitley Warriors have that tag too. I’m not sure about anyone else but it would be nice to join the list as it’s a massive achievement.
MORE TOP STORIES:
We set out our targets at the start of the season – to win the league, to stay unbeaten, and to win the play-offs.
Ticking the first one of those off early has led to us taking our foot off the gas a little.
At training last Thursday I made a point of us trying to get back to our best, and in the first period at Sutton Sting on Sunday night we were close to doing that.
We weren’t able to maintain that tempo throughout, but it was a good start to get us back on the right road.
I don’t like saying it’s been hard to motivate ourselves since winning the title, but I have to admit it has been tricky.
Teams around us are still fighting for play-off spots and are raising their game. But because we’ve won it, with plenty of games to spare, we have been guilty of dropping off a little bit.
We are still winning games though, so we must be doing something right.
Adam Brittle got us on the front foot early against Sutton with a goal in the first minute or two.
I added the second midway through the second period and then Jordan Bannon’s second in as many games followed quickly.
There were no goals in the final period but their goalkeeper had an excellent game.
He’s played a massive part in them being in with a shout of a top four finish.
But I think we were disappointed not to get more goals because we had lots of chances, but we just couldn’t put it away.
We kept things tight though and ‘Dangy’ – goalkeeper Danny Brittle – recorded back-to-back shut-outs which is good for his confidence going into the last two games.
If we can keep clean sheets it gives you a chance of winning.
If we can sign off with maximum points from our end-of-season double header, that would be a great way to end our league season, and set us up nicely for next month’s play-offs.
