BURNLEY director Brendan Flood was part of a crowd of 62,510 at the Citrus Bowl for the MLS debut of Orlando City – the club he co-founded five years ago.

Flood joined forces with Phil Rawlins, Dan Williams and Steve Donner to relocate the Austin Aztex to Florida in 2010 ahead of a planned application for an MLS franchise.

Orlando City have entered the MLS for the first time this year and they drew 1-1 at home to New York City on Sunday night in their debut in the league.

Former Burnley striker Martin Paterson was injured but star signing Kaka equalised in injury time for Orlando, who are managed by ex-Clarets boss Adrian Heath.

A stunning crowd of more than 60,000 was present for the match, with Flood among those in the stands.

Heath said: “I’m extremely proud of everyone.

“It was absolutely incredible and something I’ll remember forever.”

Former Burnley defender Tyrone Mears made a winning start to his MLS career as he started for Seattle Sounders in their 3-0 home win over New England Revolution.

Clint Dempsey scored twice, with Obafemi Martins netting the other goal in a game that was watched by 39,782.

Owen Coyle commenced his reign as Houston Dynamo boss with a 1-0 triumph over Columbus Crew, with ex-Derby forward Giles Barnes scoring the only goal.

Steven Caldwell started for Toronto as they won 3-1 at Vancouver Whitecaps.
