CLARETS defender Michael Keane believes Burnley can take confidence from the points gained at Manchester City and Newcastle as they prepare to visit Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge.

Sean Dyche’s side earned surprise come-from-behind draws at the Etihad Stadium and St James’ Park over the festive period.

Recently they themselves have become victims of comebacks, letting two-goal leads slip in three of their last four fixtures, and they now face a daunting couple of weeks with away games at Manchester United and Chelsea.

Tomorrow night Keane will return to Old Trafford for the first time since making his loan move at Turf Moor permanent during January, and he sees no reason why his new club can’t get another result against the odds.

“We take massive confidence from them,” the 22-year-old said of the Man City and Newcastle results.

“There was also the game here against Liverpool. Some of our best performances have come against the bigger teams. The pitch will be really nice at Old Trafford so that will help us play some good football.

“I think we can really affect them and hopefully we can get a positive result.”

Burnley will head to Old Trafford having surrendered a 2-0 lead to only take a point against West Brom, with two goals from corners proving their undoing, and Keane accepts that defending those dead ball situations needs to be worked on.

“I don’t know why it is – we’ve not changed anything.” he said.

“Sunday is completely different because they haven’t carved us open at all.”

“I think we stayed solid and continued to play our football but set plays can happen so we need to work on them.”

Despite seeing two points slip away, Burnley climbed back out of the relegation zone.

“That’s obviously where we want to be and if we’re in that position at the end of the season then everyone will be really happy,” said Keane.

“We’ve got to keep going, we’ve got some tough games ahead now, but there’s no pressure on us so we can go and play our football and hopefully pick up a few surprise results.”

Keane is one of three former Red Devils in the Burnley side, along with Tom Heaton and David Jones, and he can’t wait to return to Old Trafford.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “It’s going to be a bit strange for me but we’ll go there looking for a win. There’s no reason why we can’t. We’ve shown in previous games that we can play against the biggest teams in the league so we’ll go there on Wednesday night and go again.”

Keane’s only league appearance for Manchester United came earlier this season when he came off the bench in a 1-1 draw at Sunderland. He also featured in United’s 4-0 League Cup defeat to MK Dons before joining Burnley.
