Tom Heaton 7

Relatively untroubled in the Clarets goal but collected a couple of crosses well and was well placed to see a Hernandez header arrive straight at him.

Kieran Trippier 8

His crossing has failed to reach last term’s heights so far this season but his delivery for Barnes’ goal was a superb ball in.

Michael Duff 7

One loose first half pass almost set Sone Aluko away but in the second half he defended strongly as the Clarets saw it out.

Jason Shackell 8

A captain’s performance at the back. He dominated £10million Abel Hernandez and lead by example, putting his body on the line to keep the clean sheet.

Stephen Ward 7

Kept Ahmed Elmohamady quiet and was calm in possession when he managed to get forward down the left. Won a vital defensive header towards the end.

Scott Arfield 6

Very quiet by his usual standards, perhaps struggling to adapt to moving back out wide after several weeks in the centre of midfield.

Dean Marney 8

Got forward well on a couple of occasions and raised a cheer in the first half with a Zinedine Zidane-esque drag back and spin.

David Jones 7

He and Marney controlled the play against a three-man Hull midfield in the first half, but didn’t always move the ball quickly.

George Boyd 7

Not his best game against his former club but he still showed some neat touches and a prodigious work rate. Had a shot inside the area blocked.

Danny Ings 8

Has been sharp since his return injury and was unlucky not to find himself on the score sheet again as he linked midfield and attack well.

Ashley Barnes 8

Showed he can play at this level with his goal and looked to have more of a partnership with Ings than Jutkiewicz and Sordell.
