BURNLEY goalkeeper Matt Gilks has been called up to the Scotland squad for upcoming matches against Republic of Ireland and England, but once more there is no place for Clarets’ midfield man Scott Arfield.

The Scot has continued to impress in the Premier League, having played a key role in last season’s promotion campaign. But he has yet to receive international recognition for his efforts.

That honour has instead fallen to Rangers midfielder Lewis Macleod, whose first senior call-up comes on the back of scoring seven goals for the Scottish Championship side.

The 20-year-old has been capped at every level from Under 16s to U21s.

Scotland will play the Republic in a crucial European Championship qualifier at Celtic Park on November 14 before facing England in a friendly at the same venue four days later.

Stoke City full-back Phil Bardsley has been recalled to the squad in the absence of the injured Alan Hutton while Sheffield Wednesday striker Stevie May retains his place and Celtic's Charlie Mulgrew returns from injury and suspension.

Regarding the selection of Macleod, Strachan said: “I like bringing young players along, they add enthusiasm to the squad.”
