SATURDAY prompted a walk down Memory Lane for me. For it was 51 years ago that I made my debut for Burnley away to Arsenal. I remember it like yesterday, at Highbury in the old First Division.

We won the game 3-2, and I managed to score with a header after 20 minutes.

A friend of mine in Weymouth text me at the weekend to ask if I would turn out alongside Danny Ings and see if history would repeat itself.

What Burnley fans wouldn’t give for a repeat of that scorline. But alas, Arsenal were just too good and never let the Clarets have a chance.

Thank goodness Tom Heaton was in such phenomenal form at the Emirates, otherwise the score could have been six or seven to the Gunners.

Our defenders and goalkeeper did well to keep it at 0-0 until the 70th minute, but then Alexis Sanchez – the Chilean star – came into his own. Two minutes later we were 2-0 down and it was game over.

The Clarets did earlier have a let-off when the referee failed to see George Boyd handle the ball when defending a corner.

But we are playing with the big boys now and I think we are going to have to learn quickly if we are going to survive in the Premier League.

Sean Dyche is doing a good job as manager with limited funds, as pointed out on Match of the Day, but we are finding it tough and it will be a tall order to stay up.

It can be done though, and I’m sure the manager will be doing all he can to make it happen.

If only someone would come along to inject millions and make the task a bit easier.

But maybe we can get that win we need before the international break with the visit of Hull City on Saturday.

They are a team that we can beat. It’s not going to be easy but we’ve got to be looking to pick up points against the likes of Hull at home.

  • I WAS sorry to hear that Joe Brown, the former Burnley manager, has passed away.

Joe was a wonderful person who helped me with my career when he was the youth team coach.

I will never forget you Joe, you were the complete gentleman and will be sorely missed.

Rest in peace.
