DAVID Jones insists Burnley cannot afford to panic about their current position at the bottom of the table.

The Clarets sit three points adrift after failing to win any of their first 10 games since promotion to the top flight.

Jones has previously been in Premier League relegation battles with Wolves, Wigan Athletic and Derby County – with the latter winning only one game on the way to the drop in 2007/08.

The 29-year-old midfielder knows from experience that Burnley must stay calm if they are to fight their way out of their current predicament.

“One thing you can’t do is panic,” Jones said.

“You’ve got to be relaxed, focused and have clarity of mind to be able to perform at this level. That’s what we’ll continue to do.

“Internally we have lots of confidence that we can get results and keep together as a team, and build on that spirit that we showed last year and this year.

“We just need to turn that spirit into good football and good results.”

The Clarets were beaten 3-0 at Arsenal at the weekend, despite holding out for 70 minutes.

Now they are preparing for a home game against Hull City on Saturday.

“Ten games into the season we don’t want to just keep taking positives,” Jones said.

“There are some positives of course. I think if we can play with the same discipline but maybe take the few details and the last 20 minutes at Arsenal when we conceded the goals that we weren't happy with.

"If we tighten up there, we're at home and it will be another tough game, but one that we need to do well in.

"We had a gameplan against Arsenal and we were disciplined, did our jobs and worked hard but just didn't see it through for 90 minutes.

"It is hard. That's just the step up in level that we've come to.

"You've got those kind of players around you and you've got to keep your concentration otherwise they can hurt you in a split second.

"If you're not in the right position you get punished.

"It's fine margins, little details, but at this level it all counts."

Jones, though, was pleased to be reunited with his central midfield partner Dean Marney at the Emirates.

The pair have formed an understanding that helped guide the Clarets to promotion last season.

"I like playing with him," Jones said.

"Since I came to the club most of the games gave been with him.

"It was good to get him back and for him to get a good 80 minutes unscathed.

"He brings energy, quality, experience, all the things you need to compete at this level."
