LAST-GASP Blackburn Rovers hero Ben Marshall insists he will not be getting carried away with his own fantastic form.

The 23-year-old has developed into one of Gary Bowyer’s most important players this season and his exquisite injury-time free kick at Ipswich Town on Saturday ensured 10-man Rovers snatched a dramatic and morale-boosting point.

It was Marshall’s fourth goal of the season and it came hot on the heels of his nomination for the Championship player of the month award for September.

“I’m having a good run, playing well and scoring goals, which I want to do,” said the former England U21s international, who missed the final three months of last season with ankle ligament damage.

“I’m just trying to do the right things and hopefully I can kick on.

“With my injury it was nice to be nominated for the award, it was a good personal achievement and hopefully I can win one before the end of the season.

“But for now I’m just happy to take every game as it comes.”

Marshall knew from the moment his 20-yard free kick left his right foot on Saturday it was destined for the top corner.

“I was halfway over to the fans before it hit the net!” he joked.

“There was only one side it could go, the keeper showed me that side, so I knew if I could put it over the wall, and put it in the right spot, it was going in.

“I thought the game was slipping away from us and we didn’t look like scoring but luckily I got an opportunity to have a free kick and I put it in.”

Marshall’s stunning strike means Rovers remain four points off the play-offs, but now eight from top spot, going into tomorrow’s visit of Birmingham City to Ewood Park.

“We’ve been winning, losing, a bit inconsistent,” said Marshall.

“With a bit more consistency I’m sure we can push on and if we can win a few games on the bounce it’s amazing what a bit of confidence can do.”

Marshall, for the third game running, started at right back against Ipswich.

But he was pushed further upfield for the final 15 minutes and, with Alex Baptiste fit again, he could be restored to one of the wide midfield berths for the Birmingham clash.

“I’ve enjoyed it at right back,” said the versatile star, who has also operated behind the forwards this season.

“I’ve got a job to do at the end of the day, I’ll play wherever and hopefully I can make a difference.”

Rovers boss Bowyer will be without Matt Kilgallon against Birmingham as the centre back will be hit with a one-match ban after he was shown a controversial second yellow card against Ipswich.

Captain Grant Hanley, whose place was taken by Kilgallon, trained on Thursday and Friday after returning from international duty injured.

But he did not travel to the Portman Road after he felt pain in his knee.

Bowyer is hopeful Hanley, along with attacker Josh King, will be fit to face Birmingham.
