FIT and refreshed midfield star Tom Cairney has no doubt Blackburn Rovers will rediscover their shooting boots.

Rovers had an incredible 67 shots in their three matches before the international break.

But Gary Bowyer’s wasteful side scored only twice as they picked up just two points from their triple header with Watford, Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town.

That disappointing return has left them 12th in the Championship standings, six points off top spot and four from the play-offs, going into Saturday’s tricky trip to in-form Ipswich Town.

But Rovers could take heart from a morale-boosting second clean sheet of the campaign in the stalemate with Roses rivals Huddersfield last time out.

And Cairney, who played through the pain barrier in the 0-0 Ewood Park draw, insists: “I think if we can keep clean sheets we will win games because the number of chances we have been creating is frightening.

“I think in that last week alone we created enough chances to win five games so that’s why none of us were happy that we only got two points.

“But if we do keep clean sheets, like we did against Huddersfield, then we’ll definitely start climbing up the league because we will always score goals.”

Cairney did well to play against the Terriers.

Rovers’ reigning player of the year was still feeling the effects of the groin injury which had ruled him out of the 2-0 defeat at Rotherham four days earlier.

But having been given chance to rest up, Cairney returned to full training on Monday and he will be raring to take on an Ipswich team unbeaten in seven games.

Rovers boss Bowyer is also set to be boosted by the return of Rudy Gestede, Corry Evans, David Dunn and possibly Alex Baptiste for the Portman Road clash.

And Cairney said: “We’ve had quite a few injuries and if I’m being honest I was still feeling my groin.

“But after two weeks we should have people like Rudy back and Corry back and there will be brilliant competition in the squad.

“Once we have that we have to kick on and try and go on a bit of a charge.

“We’re only six points off the top and that’s frightening as we haven’t been able to get that consistency going yet.

“But we’re still confident, we’re young, very enthusiastic and, while we’re going to make mistakes, when we do, they will be honest mistakes.”

Bowyer will have to check on the fitness of Josh King after he became the second Rovers player to sustain an injury while on international duty.

The attacker hurt his lower back and was substituted 58 minutes into Norway’s 2-1 win over Bulgaria in Oslo on Tuesday night.

After the match King said he had not experienced an injury like it before and that he did not know how bad it was.

Captain Grant Hanley hurt his knee in Scotland’s 1-0 victory over Georgia in Glasgow on Saturday.

It is hoped the problem is not serious.

But the centre back, who has been an ever present for Rovers in the league this season, was yesterday still undergoing assessment.
