JOHN Coleman’s winning streak in his second spell as Stanley boss came to end – but a horror injury to loan keeper Aaron Chapman overshadowed the loss.
Chapman leapt for a high ball in injury-time and landed awkwardly in the back of the net with the Chesterfield loanee stretchered off and rushed straight to Blackburn Hospital.
It’s believed he has damaged both his ankle and his knee ligaments with Coleman saying it ‘looked bad’ as he awaited further news on his 6ft 8in stopper.
The Reds chief was gutted for his goalie and also had to deal with the defeat which stopped him chalking up a fourth successive win as the Stanley boss – which looked in the bag at half-time.
As in previous games, Stanley started off on the front foot and were in control despite Coleman springing a surprise in his team selection by leaving top scorer James Gray on the bench following his return from suspension with winger Lee Molyneux making his third ‘debut’ for the Reds.
Stanley bossed the first half with Blackburn loanee John O’Sullivan setting up Luke Joyce but the captain could only head over while Molyneux came close twice in the early stages.
Firstly, his strike took a deflection and found the side netting – although some in the main stand thought it had gone in – while the second was after good link-up play with O’Sullivan but his final effort was blocked.
From the resulting O’Sullivan corner, defender Rob Atkinson got up well, only to see his header cleared off the line as the Reds just couldn’t capitalise on their early chances.
While Stanley did have a lot of it their way, Chapman was called into action in the 26th minute when he finger-tipped over a Brian Saah blast as the Daggers showed they weren’t out of it.
From then on it was nip and tuck until Stanley took the lead on 39 minutes. O’Sullivan’s cross was mis-hit by Kal Naismith in front of goal and the ball came out to West Ham loan frontman Sean Maguire on the left who stroked it home.
Stanley had looked fairly comfortable however Daggers manager Wayne Burnett made what proved to be an inspired substitution bringing on Ade Yusuff at the break.
Striker Yusuff made national headlines last month after being plucked from non-league by the Daggers – he was working at restaurant chain Wagamama’s at the time and chose to work his notice and train at the same time rather than abandon his job immediately when he signed a League Two contract, something he won admirers for.
And he showed he could serve up a treat on the field when the 20-year-old got the ball to the left of the area in the 57th minute, ran at the Reds defence, found space and tucked the ball into the far corner of the net.
Stanley had been so much in control they were shell-shocked and seven minutes later Yusuff repeated the trick, once again allowed time and space to drill home with an almost identical goal.
From then on, Stanley went on the hunt for an equaliser and thought they had got it when defender Tom Aldred’s header bounced off the underside of the crossbar and down onto the line.
Visiting keeper Mark Cousins then produced the save of the game when Molyneux’s tricky cross was blocked by defender Scott Doe six yards out who could only direct the ball towards his own goal. Somehow Cousins stuck out his legs and kept the ball out to spare his team-mates blushes – a sure sign that this wasn’t to be Stanley’s day.
Then came Chapman’s horror injury – and there followed a bit of jostling at the final whistle between some of the players as Stanley slipped five places down the league to 16th.
