The 22-year-old played a clever reverse pass for Cardiff City winger Mats Moller Daehli to break the deadlock in the 22nd minute.
King, who expressed his frustration over his lack of playing time at Rovers before the match, then scored twice himself.
In the 26th minute he raced into the area and cut inside to fire home and make it 2-0.
Then four minutes after half time he headed in a cross from Per Ciljan Skjelbred.
The victory was important for Norway after they had opened their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 home defeat to Italy last month.
Before that, King had starred for Norway in a friendly against England at Wembley.
Now the Norwegians return to home soil tonight when they host Bulgaria at the Ullevaal Stadium in Olso (7.45pm).
Also in Group H, leaders Italy make the trip to Malta and Croatia are at home to Azerbaijan.
