STEVEN Burke’s hopes of a second Commonwealth Games medal were blown away in the 4,000m individual pursuit.
Burke, who was a member of the England team who won silver in the team pursuit yesterday, could only record the 10th fastest time at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
The Colne rider clocked 4mins 31.752secs in his heat where he was ‘lapped’ by Welsh rider Owain Doull who will contest the bronze medal ride this evening.
Jack Bobridge, a member of the Australian team that beat England in the team pursuit final, was fastest in 4mins 19.11 secs.
He will go head-to-head with Aussie team-mate Alex Edmondson – who was also a member of the winning quartet – for individual gold.
Doull, who was third fastest, was ride against Kiwi Marc Ryan for the bronze medal.
Burke, who won Olympic gold in the team pursuit at London 2012, had to settle for silver this time as an England team that included Sir Bradley Wiggins, Ed Clancy and Andy Tennant, were well beaten by Australia in last night’s 4,000m team pursuit final.
